Oscars Betting Odds 2021

Posted by Ryan Fowler . Last updated:

Despite the attempt by some movie theatre chains to re-open at reduced capacity, chances are you caught the field of 2021 Oscar nominees while streaming the best Hollywood had to offer in 2020 from the comforts of your couch. Although delayed, the 93rd Academy Awards show will go on and our top-rated online sportsbooks have cooked up Oscar odds for the favorites to take home some hardware this Sunday, April 25 and now is the time to bet on the Oscars online. Due to pandemic precautions, Academy Awards producer Steven Soderbergh decided Hollywood’s biggest night should take place primarily in the open-air environment of Los Angeles Union Station.

Odds to Win Academy Award for Best Picture

The best picture favorite, Nomadland staring Frances McDormand, illustrates how clunky the release calendar was last year. It had a one-week streaming release in early-December, was in select IMAX theatres in late-January and then opened both in theatres and began streaming on Hulu on February 19, 2021. The favorite to win the 2020/21 Oscar for best picture saw an odds jump from -300 to -600 (bet $600 to win $100) where it has remained steady for several weeks. Not bad for a film that was just released to a broad audience in mid-February.

The movie with the second-best odds at +500 (risk $100 to win $500), Trial of the Chicago 7 was originally scheduled to be a broad theatrical release, but due to the pandemic, its distribution rights were sold to Netflix. It was released in select theatres (think big cities) back in September and began airing on Netflix streaming platform come mid-October.

Nominee Odds
Nomadland -600
Trial of Chicago 7 +500
Minari +1600
Promising Young Woman +2000
Mank +4000
Judas and the Black Messiah +4000
Sound of Metal +8000
The Father +8000

Odds to Win For Best Actor/Actress

Best Actor Odds

Chadwick Boseman is nominated for best actor for the film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” – where the late actor remains the favorite at -1200, down from -1600 a few weeks ago. As you may know, Boseman died of colon cancer in late-August 2020. In the days following his death, it was learned that he was undergoing cancer treatment while filming his breakout role of T’Challa in Marvel’s “Black Panther.”

If Anthony Hopkins could pull off the upset at +550, it would be his second Oscar for best actor after earning the trophy for his haunting portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in 1992’s “Silence of the Lambs.”

Nominee Odds
Chadwick Boseman -1200
Anthony Hopkins +550
Riz Ahmed +1400
Steve Yeun +2800
Gary Oldman +3300

Best Actress Odds

Three leading ladies boast odds 4-to-1-or-better to win Best Actress. Carey Mulligan remains the favorite at +125 for her role in “Promising Young Woman,” while Viola Davis saw a significant odds jump up to +175 after winning a Screen Actors Guild Award. Frances McDormand’s odds dipped to +400, but she remains in the mix for her lead role in “Nomadland.”

Mulligan earned a best actress nomination back in 2009 for the film, “An Education.” Viola Davis won an Oscar for best supporting actress back in 2017 for her role in “Fences.” Two-time best actress, McDormand has taken home the hardware for her efforts in 2018’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and the iconic 1997 film “Fargo.”

Nominee Odds
Carey Mulligan +125
Viola Davis +175
Frances McDormand +400

At only 38 years old, Zhao has previously received Independent Spirit Award nominations for her directorial work. Nomadland is just her third feature-length film.

With Aaron Sorkin off the board, David Fincher now owns the second-best odds, at 9-to-1, for his directorial talents on the film “Mank” which takes a look at 1930’s Hollywood and Herman J. Mankiewicz’s efforts to finish “Citizen Kane.”

Nominee Odds
Chloe Zhao -3000 (from -1200 to -2500)
David Fincher +900
Lee Isaac Chung +2000

Odds to Win for Best Supporting Actor/Actress

Best Supporting Actor Odds

Daniel Kaluuya, best-known for his lead role in the film “Get Out,” is now the landslide favorite to win best supporting actor at -3000 for his work in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” followed by Paul Raci 12-to-1, Sound of Metal, and Sasha Baron Cohen 14-to-1, known best for his Borat alter-ego, for his portrayal of Abbie Hoffman in Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Leslie Odom Jr. (+1600) isn’t on the board for playing Aaron Burr in Disney’s “Hamilton,” but for “One Night In Miami.”

Nominee Odds
Daniel Kaluuya -3000 (from -1400)
Paul Raci +1200
Sacha Baron Cohen +1400
Leslie Odom Jr. +1600
LaKeith Stanfield +3300

Best Supporting Actress Odds

After losing ground to rising star Maria Bakalova last month, Youn Yuh-jung has regained strong control as Best Supporting Actress favorite at -600, up from -300 two weeks ago.

Youn Yuh-jung’s career dates back to 1969 when she won an award for best new talent. Over the next five decades, Yuh-jung was nominated for dozens of awards and won time after time. With her resume, you could do a lot worse than +175.

Bakalova made headlines last fall when a clip featuring her and Rudy Giuliani in an out-of-context compromising position went viral on social media. Speaking of which, Bakalova and Giuliani are the favorites to win the 2021 Razzie for “Worst Screen Combo”.

At 73 years old, and knowing the wide range of films she’s appeared in, it’s amazing to learn that Glenn Close has never won an Academy Award. However, her odds have slipped back to +1100 for her role in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Nominee Odds
Youn Yuh-jung -600
Maria Bakalova +400
Glenn Close +1100
Olivia Colman +2500
Amanda Seyfried +3500

Best Costume Design was neck-and-neck, but an overwhelming favorite has emerged in recent weeks.

“Ma Raineys Black Bottom” is now -450 to win, while “Emma” fell to +333. “Emma” is a period piece film based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. Ma Rainey is an influential jazz singer and the film chronicles a turbulent recording session set in 1920’s Chicago.

The Razzies

The Razzies

The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, is a parody awards show honoring the worst Hollywood had to offer in 2020.

For example, My Pillow founder and CEO, Mike Lindell is up for worst actor for his role in “Absolute Proof,” a film that claimed a Chinese cyberattack “flipped” the 2020 election in favor of President Joe Biden.

“Music” staring Kate Hudson is the favorite to win the award for Worst Picture and Rudy Giuliani is the -600 heavy favorite to win for Worst Supporting Actor following his uncomfortable cameo in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Oscars Memorable Moments

Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? It’s easy to root for the favorites and just last year, at the 2020 Academy Awards, nearly everybody** who was expected to win in the top categories headed home with an Oscar. Joaquin Phoenix’s odds to win best actor for his lead role in “Joker” were -4150, which meant to win $100, you would have needed to risk $4150. Brad Pitt’s odds to win best supporting actor were -4250 for his chops in “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” Renee Zelweger -1175 for best actress and Laura Dern -1650 for best supporting actress.

So, here’s to some of the biggest dogs to shock the world on Hollywood’s biggest night.
